Board Meeting Minutes

Date: April 26th, 2026

Board Members:  Steve Beckman (Secretary), Mike Benedict (Communications), Nella Davis-Ray (President), John Hays, Matthew Kazmierski (Vice President), Denise Moore, Judy Putnam, Alice Schehr (Treasurer), Rhoda Wolff

Call to order: Nella Davis-Ray called to order this meeting of the Brookfield Heritage Neighborhood Association Executive Committee at 4:11 p.m. on April 26th, 2026 in a meeting at Ellison Brewery and Spirits at 4903 Dawn Ave.

Roll Call:

  • Absent: Denise Moore
  • Others in attendance: None
  • Quorum present: Yes

Approval of Past Minutes: A motion was made and seconded to approve the updated minutes from the Board meeting held on February 8th, 2025 as presented. The motion carried without objection.

Treasurer Updates: 

  1. The current MSUFCU account balance is $4,392.21

Old Business:

  1. Environment Committee updates
    • Alice and City Arborist Blake Harrity walked the neighborhood to observe all recently-removed trees. Three large stumps need to be completely ground down. The City will pay for the first 12 inches of grinding. To complete the grinding to 30 inches would cost BHNA $350/each.
    • 16 replacement tree locations identified where either trees have already been removed or there are open spaces. Will attempt to plant them this fall starting in September.
      • Three are far back from the street and are on resident’s property. Two have medium bushes nearby that would need to be removed before planting a tree. One is near a utility line and will need to be a special species.
    • Plants that were planted next to the street are on city property
      • 1615 Roseland currently has plants in the city’s property area
    • Ginkgo, Elm, Zelkova, and Tulip trees will be planted in the next several years
      • Swamp Oak, White Oak, and possibly Tulip trees can be planted in low areas that are more susceptible to flooding
    • The City will return in seven years to survey the neighborhood for tree removals

New Business

  1. 2026 Annual Meeting and Picnic
    • BHNA Centennial was in 2024 so no special celebration will be planned this year
  2. Updates to BHNA website
    • Add recent newsletters and updated street tree information / board resolution
    • Update entries for past tree reports to link to updated tree reports
  3. New property owners
    • Nella delivered a welcome letter to 235 Maplewood Dr.
    • 264 Hagadorn, which was previously owned by University Christian Church, was sold in 2024
  4. Luminaries
    • Bags need flattening for storage. Nella, Judy, and others will help Alice.
  5. Concern regarding multi-resident housing that is not licensed as a rental property
    • Nella will bring up the topic in the next meeting of neighborhood association presidents
